Video Tutorial: How to Get Beachy Waves

June 4, 2012

Hiyooooo.

I suck at making videos. Just an FYI.

I have finally, FINALLY, put together a hair tutorial for you all on how I get beachy waves in my hair. My friends have been asking me for SO LONG now, and I’m so sorry I haven’t done it sooner. I even made false promises, only to let you down! But it’s HERE, and probably not that great, but here nonetheless! I’m not quite sure why my friends think my hair looks so great because I always seem to find something wrong with it, but I’m flattered they have asked me to show them my ways. πŸ™‚

Some info for you to know…..

The products I use on my hair are as follows:

  • Pureology Hydrate Shampoo/Conditioner
  • Moroccan Oil and/or Orofluido Hair Elixir
  • Kenra #25 Volumizing Hair Spray
  • Hot Tools Gold Curling Iron, 1″ or 1.5″ (the larger the barrel, the bigger the curl/more wavey your hair will be!)

I purchase my hair products through Ulta or my local professional beauty shop. They are pricy, but I refuse to use the cheap stuff because it doesn’t work on my hair!

*UPDATE: Some of you have asked, and I forgot to mention this in the video….I start by blow drying my hair straight prior to curling! Sometimes I let it air dry and then touch it up with a round brush for some volume. Whichever way you do it, starting with it straight is best!*

Also….I tried not to say “um” too much, but apparently forgot by the end of the video. And, I’m a total dork on camera. Please, please, PLEASE know I am in no way a professional or even semi-professional hair stylist. I have NO CLUE what I’m doing, but this is how I do it. So if you are a hair stylist and I’m doing something wrong, please do not yell at me! I am openly admitting I don’t know what I’m doing! πŸ™‚ Also, the quality of this video isn’t so hot, and I can’t figure out why….so I apologize in advance!

Some key tips:

  • curl AWAY from your face
  • don’t curl all the way to the end! leave a few inches of straight hair
  • loosen up the curls with your fingers.
Some photos:

Soooooo. That’s that. If you have questions, leave them in a comment below! I realize that I’m not very good at explaining my process, so I may have not discussed a question of yours. I will get back to you ASAP. πŸ™‚ Hope this helps! Or at the very least, gives you a basis!

Also….the winner of the adoption raffle was Marina B.! Thank you to everyone who entered, your donations were BEYOND generous. Our gratitude is beyond measure. More updates on our little Eloise coming soon!

NOW….how do you get the same effect with incredibly fine, straight, non-curl-holding hair??? πŸ™‚

HAIRSPRAY, HAIRSPRAY, and more HAIRSPRAY. And then avoid all open flames for the day, as you will be highly flammable. πŸ˜‰

I needed this so bad! Thankyou! You did great! Thanks for the tip on the elixer. I was going to purchase morrocain oil, now I’ll get the other stuff instead, and now I know I need a bigger iron. Thanks again!

Moroccan Oil is definitely great, I just LOVE the Orofluido! I got it as a sample in my March Birchbox and I’ve been hooked ever since! Let me know how you make out! πŸ™‚

Youre adorable! I pretty much do the exact same thing when I curl my hair. So funny! I just need a better curling iron & product!! πŸ™‚ but I totally agree with you on the messy look! I hate perfectly neat hair!!

Ummm, you’re amazing! ;o) I am sooooo low maintenance with my hair & have no clue what to really “do” with it other than straightening it, so I will totally have to try this sometime!! One question, unlike you (from what I recall you saying before) I have fairly oily hair – should I still use an oil? I know you may not know the answer since you’re not a pro-stylist, but I’m curious as to your thoughts. :o)

I think you should still be fine with an oil! The key to the serum/elixirs is to use a VERY small amount….like dime size or less! It shouldn’t make your hair greasy if you use the correct amount πŸ™‚ Let me know if it works for you!

This is exactly how I do mine too πŸ™‚ My friends always ask to, and I always think its so easy, but I guess not if you dont curl your hair a lot!

Haha, I’ve only been told I have an accent one time before! I guess us New Englanders say some things a little strange πŸ˜‰ Too bad it’s not a cute Southern accent..that would be fun! πŸ™‚

I don’t think you have an accent! but i do have a question: do you have to straighten your hair first? mine takes almost 2 hours to be dried and straightened with an iron! and what are your thoughts on me using the 2 inch hot tools? you’ve seen my mop top since i know you in blog world AND real life. not sure if the 2 inch would take less time for me or just look stupid

I do straighten my hair first, but i don’t use a flat iron. I found that using a flat iron first makes the hair hard to curl. I would use a blow dryer and round brush to smooth it out the best you can, and then use the curling iron to curl. i don’t know how long your hair is now because i haven’t seen you SINCE YOUR WEDDING! :O But I use the 1 1/2 inch on my hair, and you can see the length in the video. I feel like that’s a good size for long hair. Hope that helps! πŸ™‚

mine is way longer than yours now (growing to donate to locks of love) and really unmanageable. hmmmm maybe I’ll just go with the 1.5 inch. i suck at this stuff but I will try it out…. HAIR GOES NOTHING…. haha get it? wow I’m corny.

Hey Laur, great video! I learned a couple of tricks from watching…one thing I wanted to add you said a friend had a question about clamp marks, that also has to do with the quality of curling iron! Hot Tools is an awesome brand, so as long as you’re doing like you said and holding away from your face and the hair is straight, you won’t get a bend! if the hair is pulling against the top part of the iron, you will get a slight bend! What is the name of the oil you use again and about how much do you use? Where can I find it? πŸ˜‰

Hi Lauren, I was so excited to see this video especially after our chat at Sozo/church a few weeks ago talking about how beautiful your hair is and i have no idea what to do with mine! I will have to try those products. as you know i have very think uncontrollable hair and maybe that will work for me. Where is Ulta? Not sure if i will curl it all the time, but maybe i will try. I’m thinking of cutting my hair much shorter plus with my age i don’t think i like it too long anymore πŸ™‚ I don’t know, i’ve been tossing that around in my head, probably because i can’t do anything with my hair to calm it down. thank you so much for this video, you did an awesome job!!

Hi Jane!!! I don’t have a video on how I blow dry my hair straight, but that’s a good idea for a post! I think I’m going to start doing more videos because I’ve received some great feedback. πŸ™‚ I love the Orofluido for flyways, I believe I linked to it in the post! It can be purchased at Ulta πŸ™‚ Hope that helps!
