How to Help Your Child Adjust Back to School August 3, 2018
Thank you to JCPenney for sponsoring today’s post!
I can’t believe summer is already over, and the kids are heading back to school in just a few short weeks! I’m so sad because this means we’re heading into cooler weather (and we love every second of summer!) but also a little glad to be getting back on a routine! Today I’m sharing some tips on How to Help Your Child Adjust Back to School, especially for the little ones who might be entering school for the first time! If you have any additional tips, I would love for you to share in a comment below as well!
How to Help Your Child Adjust Back to School
Start your new schedule at least a week before.
I thought I would be good about being on a “schedule” this summer, but honestly? It’s summer and I didn’t want to be – ha! That being said, we’ll have an adjustment period to get back into the swing of things this fall. I suggest starting your new schedule at least a week before hand (wake up times, a new morning routine, etc) to allow for some trial and error, and to ease into it once school starts back up!
Bring your child to check out their new school ahead of time.
Heading to a new school can be a little scary for a small child, so it’s a great idea to introduce them to it beforehand if you can! Do a drive by, head to the school playground, or just explore the area so your child is familiar with the sights when they head back on their own.
Let your child pick out new school clothes and gear!
This was always my favorite part about going back to school – the new clothes! Letting your child pick out their clothes, backpack, sneakers, etc will get them excited to wear them when it’s time to head back! Remind them these are “special” for going back to school so they have something to look forward to! JCPenney is a one-stop shopping destination for all things back to school, and the kids were excited to pick out some options! And I was equally excited everything was on major sale! Their prices can’t be beat, and I was able to stock up on a variety of high quality items while keeping in my budget! My daughter has been all about dresses lately, and I love the adorable sets I scored for her. I couldn’t believe the great prices on toddler boys shorts and tops for my son as well! And of course, we couldn’t forget about shoes! I was able to score some great deals on Converse styles for both kids, and these adorable sandals for my daughter.

Use a reward system.
This might not be a popular opinion, but I have no issues with rewarding my kids on the first day/week back to school. New places can be scary, and adjustments are hard – especially for toddlers heading back to preschool or a child entering kindergarten! When I drop them off the first day, I make the promise of a fun family pizza night or ice cream after dinner for a good day. And you know what? It’s worked every time. It’s very short lived, and only during the adjustment period, so habits aren’t created. I’ve got zero shame in using a reward system if it helps!
If you’re heading back to school, be sure to check out JCPenney for everything you might need! You can score awesome deals (there’s almost always a sale!) for the entire family at great prices right here!

Don’t plan anything for after school the first week. Keep it mellow to allow your child/children to decompress and to let everyone find their new rhythms.

Love this! My little is starting preschool on Sept 10 and getting a baby sister on Sept 14th so that first week is going to be EXTRA crazy for us around here (poor planning on my part ????) This will be a huge help when that week comes around!

Totally agree with your tips! As a mom of four, three are in school this year. I take each one on their own to get supplies and a Couple new outfits. Sure, it would be easier to order online or do in one big haul, but my kids look forward to “their” day each year. It’s not often they get a ton of one on one time and it’s sooooo worth it! My mom did this with me and siblings and we loved it too.

I like to have my daughter do summer workbooks so it’s not a big shock when she goes back to school of all the work she will have to do. Also trying to keep up with summer reading helps. Just have them pick out their favorite books at the library or book store.

Made a little morning to do poster/chart to remind my 4.5 yr old what she needs to do to be ready for school.
Pick out clothes the night before.
Pack up everything that needs to go in the morning the night before so you don’t leave in a rush and forget something.
Pack lunches for the week on the weekend.
