My Current Skincare Routine April 19, 2020
My skincare routine has changed quite a bit since I last shared, mainly because my perioral dermatitis has returned due to some stressful events. I’m currently focused on keeping my skin hydrated and avoiding any harsh products that might worsen the dermatitis. It’s been frustrating because I miss certain steps in my former routine, but I know I need to get my skin back on track before going back to those products! So today I’m sharing what’s currently working for me, morning and evening, even with my perioral dermatitis. These products are listed in the steps I use them in!
Morning Routine
CLEANSER: I recently switched to Osmia Black Clay Facial Soap after reading it was helpful for perioral dermatitis. I have combination skin and was a little worried about it drying me out, so I’ve been using it only once a day. I’ve been surprised to see it’s actually been quite gentle for a black clay soap, and it hasn’t dried me out one bit. I DO think it’s helped prevent my dermatitis from worsening, too!
TONER: I recently started spritzing my face with MaryRuth’s Skincare Probiotic, which I feel has also helped my dermatitis. I spray this on before applying my Origins Soothing Treatment Lotion! I love this toner so much.
EYE CREAM: I’m currently using Biossance Squalane + Peptide Eye Gel as my eye cream and really love it. It keeps my undereye area hydrated without being greasy. Highly recommend!
VITAMIN C SERUM (sometimes): Currently, with my dermatitis flare, I’m not regularly using a Vitamin C serum. Prior, I was using Skinceuticals (which I LOVE), but it was much too strong with my flare up. Biossance Squalane + Vitamin C Rose Oil is more gentle on my skin at this time, and I feel it gives my skin a smoother texture and added brightness.
RETINOL: I’m still using Biossance Squalane + Phyto-Retinol Serum for a plant-based retinol. This is my only experience with any retinol, but I feel it helps with fine lines and wrinkles. It’s gentle enough that it can be applied in the morning and evening!
MOISTURIZER: I’ve used Sunday Riley Tidal for quite some time now because I love the hydration it offers without being greasy! However, I’m currently trying out Farmacy Daily Greens Oil Free Gel Moisturizer! I wanted to find something similar to Tidal with cleaner ingredients, and my friend suggested this one. I’ll report back!
BRONZING DROPS: I’ll mix the Drunk Elephant D-Bronzi Anti-Pollution Serum with a little of my Drunk Elephant Marula Oil (listed next) if I want a slight glow to my skin. This product is awesome for a little color to your face, without being a self-tanner.
FACE OIL: I’ve been using Drunk Elephant Marula Oil for a few years now, and I can’t imagine not having it in my skincare routine! It’s the very last step of my routine, prior to sunscreen application. It’s really helped balance my skin over the years. I used to occasionally have dry patches in some areas of my face, while having an oily t-zone. I still consider myself to have combination skin, but this product has significantly changed my skin for the better, and I’m closer to normal than ever. I apply 2 drops in the morning.
SUNSCREEN (sometimes): There are two different sunscreens I love – Supergoop! Unseen Sunscreen and Drunk Elephant Umbre Tinte. I prefer to use the Umbre Tinte during the summer because it has a slight tint of color to it, which adds some color to my face while still providing protection. I’m super particular about my face getting sun, so I like that I can use the D-Bronzi and Umbre Tinte for a little color! Otherwise, Unseen Sunscreen is my go to. However, sometimes sunscreen can exacerbate my dermatitis (if I’m having a flare), so I won’t apply it if I know I’ll be inside most of the day.
EYE CREAM: I started added in the Colorscience Total Eye 3-in-1 Eye Renewal after speaking to my esthetician about my dark circles. This eye cream is tinted, and is AWESOME if you have hereditary dark circles like I do! It corrects the darkness, while having the benefits of an eye cream. I love it! I apply it last so it doesn’t get wiped away as I’m applying other products.
Evening Routine
My evening routine is pretty much the same, with the removal of some products and addition of others.
CLEANSER: In the evening, I use Elemis’s Cleansing Balm and a Makeup Eraser face cloth to remove my makeup and wash my face. It’s impressive how well it removes my makeup!
TONER: I still spritz MaryRuth’s Skincare Probiotic, followed by Origins Soothing Treatment Lotion.
EYE CREAM: I apply the Biossance Squalane + Peptide Eye Gel in the evening as well!
RETINOL: I’m still using Biossance Squalane + Phyto-Retinol Serum for a plant-based retinol. This is my only experience with any retinol, but I feel it helps with fine lines and wrinkles. It’s gentle enough that it can be applied in the morning and evening!
MOISTURIZER: I would again use Sunday Riley Tidal here (and again, I’ll report back on the Farmacy one!)
TANNING DROPS (sometimes): I love the Isle of Paradise Tanning Drops for a little color! They give a really natural tan, and I use them 1-2 times a week. I mix them in with my moisturizer in the evening.
FACE OIL: I apply my Drunk Elephant Marula Oil again in the evening. Sometimes, if I feel like my skin needs a little more hydration overnight, I’ll do 3-4 drops instead of my usual 1-2!
OVERNIGHT MASK (sometimes): I’ve been absolutely loving the Drunk Elephant F-Balm as an overnight hydrating mask, especially during the cooler months! It makes my skin super hydrated and I swear my skin looks like it’s glowing in the morning.
That’s it! I’d love to hear what products you’re currently loving, too! Leave me a comment below!
