Fall is one of my favorite times of year to decorate! I’ve always liked keeping my decor simple, neutral, and a bit unexpected. Tablescapes are one of my favorite ways to decorate for the season because they’re easily interchangeable and have a huge impact on the home. The dining table is the main place for family gatherings, so I like to take extra time to make it beautiful and inviting. I have a few tricks up my sleeve, so today I’m sharing my favorite tips for creating a fall farmhouse tablescape.
Choose your color palette. Fall doesn’t necessary need to be about shades of orange. Whether you want to be bright or neutral, choose your color palette and stick with it. I often decorate my home with neutral white pumpkins and shades of beige, white, and gray because I’m not always drawn to color. However, when I’m in a colorful mood, I love to express it! A tablescape is a great place to do this because it’s one designated area instead of an entire house (which is great if you like to change things up frequently!). For this table, I keep my pumpkins neutral and added pops of fall colors with these beautiful flowers. They really stand out against their neutral backdrop. Tying in some gold candlesticks and gold flatware evokes the warmth of the fall colors as opposed to a cooler color palette.
Add texture. If there’s one season that’s all about texture, it’s fall! I like having a variety of textures on my tabletop, from wood to porcelain to chunky knits. Using this macrame table runner with the wood chargers is a nice blend of texture next to the linen napkins and smooth white plates. Runners and placemats are great ways to do this! Another way to add texture is to add some pillows or throw blankets on chairs for a cozy feel.
Incorporate vintage elements. I always have vintage elements on my tables, whether it’s part of a centerpiece or incorporated in some other way. On this table I used vintage brass candlesticks for an unexpected touch. If you love farmhouse style, then you know using antique and vintage items is a must! The gold of these candlesticks added some warmth, and tied in the fall colors of the flowers as well. If you don’t own any vintage accents, spring for pieces that have a vintage look. Add natural elements. Whether it’s pumpkins, pinecones, branches, or greenery, adding natural elements will automatically make your tablescape feel earthy and rustic – perfect for the fall season. I chose neutral pumpkins and fresh fall flowers for this tablescape which brought life to the table.
Shop your home. The best way to create a farmhouse tablescape is by shopping the farmhouse items you already own! You’ll be surprised at what you can use to create a centerpiece or place setting decor. Baskets, buckets, and crates are great items (to name a few).
Add candles. Always add candles! Candles automatically give the dining table a cozy and welcoming feel, and I always say the more the merrier.
