German Glitter Glass Ornaments

Christmas is in FULL SWING in our household. The tree is up, Christmas carols are playing, and I’ve already attempted to get the dog to keep an elf hat on her head. Didn’t have much luck with that…….it was off the second after I snapped this picture.

(Yes, that’s a TD Bank elf hat. Apparently they give out free elf hats during this time of year.)

You might remember my sheet music ornaments from last year which are making a reappearance on our tree this year. But this year, we are adding new homemade ornaments. You better brush up on your elementary school arts and crafts skills for this first project, cause we are going back to the basics. I know, I know…it’s been a long time. Pretend you don’t have bills to pay, don’t worry about what you’re making for dinner, and bust out your boy band t-shirts….. cause we are making German glitter glass ornaments.

Say whaaaaat? What the heck is German glitter glass?

It’s not just your ordinary tinsel glitter…it’s actually made from shards of glass that undergo an extensive process which includes coating the glass with pure silver. This is what gives glitter glass its incredible shine, and also the beautiful vintage look is acquires over time. The natural tarnish that occurs makes this glitter one of a kind. I purchased my German glitter glass off Etsy last year, but I know there are many suppliers all over the web. Google will guide you. 🙂

This year I decided to have some fun and make these simple ornaments using my German glitter glass, with Miss Mustard Seed as inspiration. She recently made similar ornaments, and I credit her for introducing me to German glitter glass last holiday season.

Here’s what you need:

• German glitter glass, coarse or fine in silver
• Glue (I used Aleene’s Tacky Glue, but Elmer’s will do just fine)
• glass ornaments
• Tupperware
• spoon

First attach a hook to your ornament…you will need it to hang your ornament to dry. Also, pour your German glitter glass into the Tupperware container. This helps it stay in one place and not fly all over your work area. Also, Tupperware is good for storing the glitter because it’s air tight and prevents the loose glitter from tarnishing over time. It’s pretty simple after that…..

Hold your ornament and apply the glue in whatever shape, pattern, design your heart desires….as you can see, I had no set pattern.

Once your glue is on, gently pour the glitter all over the ornament using the spoon. Hold the ornament over your Tupperware so all the excess glitter is saved.

When your glue spots are completely covered with glitter, give the ornament one more little shake to get all the excess off. And now go hang it to dry! Upper kitchen cabinet knobs are a really great space to hang them. 🙂

Easy right?  I told you this is like 4th grade stuff. Just with more “mature” glitter 🙂 Once they’re dry, go hang them on your tree and watch them sparkle!
