You remember the wonderful interaction between the hubs and I at the start of our factory cart coffee table build? You know, he was all “ohhh that’s a dumb idea” and then totally dominated the building process? Yeah. Well he’s been pressuring me for WEEKS to finish! So after being incredibly nit-picky on the type of wheels I wanted to use (the more antique looking, the better), and searching a million stores/websites (okay, I might be exaggerating) I finally found the perfect wheels and we he was able to complete his beloved project 🙂
This is where I last left off with you..
After some sanding to smooth the edges, I stained the table with my favorite antique stain, Minwax Special Walnut #224. I feel like this color stain gives that look of antique, weathered wood which is exactly the look I was going for. Similar to the look of an antique crate.
I then applied 3 coats of poly, sanding as instructed in between. Since this is our living room coffee table, it definitely needs all the protection it can get because we are ALWAYS using this room.
Now to the caster wheels….FYI, not cheap my friends. Or at least not as cheap as I would like them to be. I did find 4″ vintage ones on Ebay, but thought they might be a bit too small for our table. Our local True Value store carried 5″ wheels for $15 a piece, but still too small for my liking. After taking like 3 weeks to research, I finally found the perfect wheels on the Wholesale Tool website for $16 a wheel. The shipping was more than I’d hoped because of the weight of the wheels…even more than they first priced it out to be. But they were great with communication and let me know the new price immediately, and my wheels arrived within a few days!

Hi Amber! Our table is 45.5″Lx26.5″Wx10″H for the actual wood part. The wheels make the actual table height in total 17.5″. Hope that helps! 🙂
Great stuff. Did the wheel set you purchased from Wholesale Tool come with swivel casters? It’s hard to tell from your picture what the two casters in the back are. I’d prefer four fixed, but I ordered the set because it was cheaper than ordering four individually. However, the set comes with two swivel and I want to be sure they don’t have a radical curve. If they looked nearly like the fixed (very straight) that would be great. Thanks for taking the time to post this project.
Hello! Our casters do not swivel! Sometimes I wish they did, but I prefer the straight lines of the non-swivel ones more! Hope that helps! 🙂
