We made some minor adjustments to the original plans. For instance, I do not need a dining table that’s 98″ long. So we measured our old table and adjusted the plans accordingly. Our table is 72″ long, and roughly 42″ wide. (Hint: Home Depot cuts the wood for you!)
We also didn’t bother to use wood glue…we never do. I actually prefer the look of the wood screws in the wood. I feel it adds a rustic touch, plus it’s less time consuming.
I painted the bottom of the table Simply White by Benjamin Moore, which is my new favorite white. I stained the top my all time favorite Minwax stain, Special Walnut #224. It’s the perfect stain to give a weathered look. I used polycrylic on top, and chose a flat finish because I felt that made the wood look even more natural.
I am SO thrilled with how it turned out! And the best part? It cost a total of $100! Now I just need some gorgeous dried hydrangeas for that galvanized bucket and some really fabulous chairs (which, as you know, I already have two of :)) More to come!
Hello, gorgeous!! Our table is really dark and shows the dust like you mentioned and also shows every scratch from our oldest daughter. I’m thinking when we move again I’ll need to convince my hubby to make one!
Yeah, I’m still questioning why I thought dark furniture was a good idea years ago! Clearly I didn’t know what I was thinking! 🙂

Hi Dana! We used 4x4s for the legs…I wanted a chunkier leg, and that did the trick! 🙂
We’re in the midst of building a similar table and I’m struggling with paint color. Simply White on the swatch looks pretty bright and stark – would you say it’s a soft white in real life? Or a bright white?

Just wondering how has your table top held up over the years? Looking to build one similar for my wife, but heard the pine boards from HomeDepot/Lowe’s have a tendancy to warp badly. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Great build by the way.
It’s held up great! As long as you seal it with some poly, it should hold up just fine. We bought the straightest board we could find!
Flat finish is the same as clear matte? I am new to all of this. You have a beautiful home and family.

Special Walnut by Minwax! We didn’t pretreat, just slapped on some stain and then poly!
Hi! Love this table, do you know what sheen & type of paint you used for the Benjamin Moore Simply White? And did you clear coat or wax over the white paint? Aaaand how does it show dirt ????. I’m painting a toddler table & chairs….
